Disclaimer

Amusingly this was the first post I ever wrote and it has become by far the most popular having reached 16,900 hits – and a commenter offering a German version has given me an idea. For each person who supplies me with a copy of the disclaimer in another language I will post it on here and supply a link to their site with a banner (if you dont have a banner I will create one for you).
German is already taken (by Catrin who suggested it) but their is a world of languages out there (pun intended) – so if you can translate it to French, Japanese, Italian, Russian, Samoan, Negerian – any language – simply send it via my contact page here with your name and your website URL and I will post it up with thanks – that’s (hopefully) 10,000 free advertisements for 2012!!
Personally I believe in a fee-Internet where anyone can display or create any content without the fear of reprisal, given it was morally correct. Morally correct is a variable standard though, what one may consider moral another may not. I guess the legal system is mankind’s way of trying to establish ground rules for the community it governs.
When I first was online as wee lad in the early 1990′s it was the Wild West, anyone could say any anything. Defamation of character – bah! Copyright – bah!
This is changing. The Internet has shifted from a quirky nerd toy to a staple diet – its as integrated into society as Newspapers and TV ever were – and in the next ten years these three concepts will merge to the point they indistinguishable.
This change has incurred legal focus – and now Defamation of Character, Copyright etc are as relavent as older mediums. As such, even a blog should have some form of disclaimer to protect itself, and in my research I found some good examples on About.Com:Blogging by Susan Gunelius.
I have taken those ideas, made some changes and merged them together into one “policy”. Feel free to use the template on your own site.

Where this stands in a true legal sense is unclear. But if I was approached legally I would feel better having demonstated some standard than none.
